メナHey there, I’m Mena (@menachite), a hybrid engineer who handles both mechanical and electrical work.
Out of nowhere, I want to talk about vintage clothing — specifically, I love clothes from the 90s.
Today I’m switching things up to introduce one of my favorite items.
With the current vintage boom, expensive vintage pieces are getting all the attention, but 90s items are relatively affordable and easy to find, while still carrying the vibe of that era.
Lately, my desire to “go out and play” has been ramping up more than ever.
It’s that season when you want to escape to the mountains or a river — somewhere a little out of the ordinary.
And my go-to partner for those moments is this.
What is the NIKE ACG AIR MADA?
The name screams outdoor adventure, but this is actually a hidden gem released in the 90s.
It was reissued a few years ago and has been quietly gaining popularity ever since.
The MADA’s biggest appeal is its “works in the city and the mountains” balance.
It has the rugged look of a trail shoe, yet its silhouette is sleek enough to blend naturally into everyday urban settings.
Design: Rugged Yet Refined
Shoes like this tend to prioritize function over everything, but the MADA layers on serious design flair too.
The leather and mesh combo, the lacing system, the placement of the ACG logo.
Everything comes together in that “a bit weird, but somehow cool” aesthetic.
Comfort: Lighter Than Expected, with Great Grip
Despite its bulky appearance, once you put them on they feel surprisingly light.
The outsole pattern is excellent — it grips even wet cobblestones on a rainy day.
The insole is on the softer side, so your feet don’t fatigue easily even after long walks.
Perfect for days when you know you’ll be doing a lot of walking.
Who Should Get These
- People who go back and forth between the city and nature
- People who want sneakers but also an outdoor feel
- People who love 90s-style design
In other words, they’re a perfect fit for someone like me.
Not hardcore outdoor gear,
but not just a fashion item either.
A reliable companion that fills that space in between.
“I don’t need flashy — but I do want personality.”
When you’re in that kind of mood, the MADA just clicks.
Sizing: Stick to Your Usual Size
I normally wear 26.5cm, and I went with 27.5cm for the AIR MADA.
The AIR MADA feels pretty generous inside — like a small size difference won’t really matter.
A true-to-size fit works fine, and slightly larger can be managed with the laces.
Maybe it’s the lightweight and soft materials, but they conform nicely.
In my case, I chose a size that’s easy to slip on and off since I planned to wear them heavily every day.
Outdoor-style shoes tend to fit tight, so I wanted something more relaxed.
The result? A great success.
The 90s — An Era of Burning Passion
Don’t you think the 90s were a special time?
Skateboard sounds echoed around street corners, your heart leaped to the beats flowing from MTV, and everyone was chasing their own “something.”
The culture of that era was like sparks — crackling and popping, filled with an energy that made your chest burn just to touch it.
There was no internet, no social media, yet people connected in real places with real passion. In my mind, the 90s were the peak of that kind of fervor.
Every moment, every boom — all of it was legendary.

Things have gotten busier and more crowded now, but that “I’m alive!” energy feels a little dimmer.
That’s exactly why I’m drawn to 90s vintage clothing.
When I pick up a faded T-shirt or jacket, it’s like I’m “wearing” that era — the air of the 90s comes rushing back vividly.
Vintage isn’t just clothing. It’s a treasure chest woven with the romance, dreams, and heat of that time.
And shining right in the heart of those 90s was NIKE ACG (All Conditions Gear).
Effortlessly crossing the boundary between outdoor and street, the sneakers it birthed are acknowledged by every fan as true classics. Air Mowabb, Air Moc, and the one I want to talk about today — the AIR MADA.

Air Mada: A Partner with the Heart of a Wild Beast
In 1994, the Air Mada emerged from ACG like a beast charging through the mountains.
“SLEEK, NIMBLE, FRIENDLY AND HAVE BIG SHARP TEETH” — these words perfectly capture Air Mada’s wild spirit.

Leaping nimbly over rocky terrain, powering through any tough trail. The design by Tinker Hatfield and Sergio Lozano has a coolness that feels like it compressed all the outdoor excitement of the 90s into one shoe.
But if you try to get an original Air Mada today, the sole would be crumbling from hydrolysis. No matter how much you love it, you can’t actually wear it.
The reality is it becomes nothing more than a collector’s item.
That’s genuinely heartbreaking. Perhaps sensing our feelings, Nike reissued it in 2022.
I have nothing but gratitude for Nike. Who was this for?
For us — everyone who yearns for the spirit of the 90s!
Being able to relive the heat of that era in an Air Mada you can actually wear — there’s nothing happier than that.
The moment I held it, I felt that rush of excitement you get when you find a vintage ACG jacket at a thrift store. It holds the vibe of the 90s in full, yet it doesn’t feel dated at all when you wear it today.
Whether hiking in the mountains or wandering through the city, this is the ultimate companion.

The Air Mada’s look is the full expression of 90s rugged appeal.
The upper combines high-durability rubber with leather and a neoprene-like soft material — tough as mountain rock, yet somehow warm. Ventilation holes let air flow through, keeping your feet comfortable even on long adventures. The Nike Air midsole delivers a bouncy, cloud-like cushioning with every step.
The outsole grips the ground firmly with deep lugs and chunky tread.
The recycled Reground outsole quietly adds a modern eco-conscious touch to that 90s soul.

The Colors of the 90s, Bringing Back an Era
The Air Mada’s color palette feels like it cut straight from the vivid imagery of the 90s.

The Air Mada charged right through the heart of 90s outdoor culture. Alongside the Air Mowabb and Air Moc, it supported the feet of trail runners and hikers.
But it was never just an outdoor shoe.
Its design also captured the hearts of skaters and hip-hop kids — looking great on the street too. The reissue carries on that dual identity.
Worn in the mountains, it’s your companion bounding over rocky terrain.
Worn in the city, it quietly tells the story of a blazing era through your feet.
The feel underfoot is like reliving that “real” sensation from the 90s.
[Summary] The NIKE ACG AIR MADA Was a Sneaker That Bridges City, Nature, and Time
After wearing them, what struck me was this: “This isn’t a shoe — it’s a tool.”
When I first took them out of the box, I’ll be honest — I was a little intimidated. “Wow, these are chunky…”
The upper combining leather and synthetic materials, the rugged sole. The full outdoor gear aesthetic.
And yet, strangely, they don’t look out of place in the city at all.
The reason is probably the overall sense of balance.
Strong presence, but never pushy. Maybe that’s what “ACG character” really means.

Lighter Than They Look
Despite their imposing looks, once your foot is in, they’re surprisingly nimble.
The sole flexes just right, and the way they wrap around your foot feels great. There’s plenty of cushioning, so your feet don’t tire even after long hours of walking.
Within a few minutes of wearing them, I thought, “These are going to be my everyday shoes.” And sure enough, I’m now wearing them about three times a week.
City, Mountains, Rain — Just Right Everywhere.
I wore them on a family camping trip recently.
The weather turned to rain, of course. But they didn’t slip on muddy ground, and water barely soaked in.
On the way home I stopped at a supermarket and they fit right into the city atmosphere without missing a beat.
The “mountain feel” and the “city feel” perfectly balanced in between — that’s what makes the AIR MADA special.
Usable everywhere. That alone makes the value of this tool skyrocket.
The Heat of the 90s, Fitting Right Into Today
The NIKE ACG AIR MADA is a “usable tool,” and at the same time, a product that connects the heat of the 90s to the present.
· That era when the line between outdoor and street was blurry
· That era when chunky sneakers ruled
· That era when things were a bit rough around the edges, yet somehow cool
A faint trace of that time’s air still lives in the AIR MADA.
Today’s functionality plus the romance of that era.
For anyone who wants both, this is the “just right” shoe.
